1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 Part 2 ... See MoreSee Less

Outline Lesson: Did I take up the cross daily in 2020?
Background: Jesus has just finished Feeding 5,000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. There were 12 baskets left over.
It would take a man 7 months of Hard labor to produce enough income to feed 5,000 men at the current wages during this time. The fact that Jesus did it in one sitting as he broke them up in companies of 50 shows us truly he is the Son of God. The miracle not only demonstrated that Jesus had power, but he is the source of all we have. He is the bread of life. (John 6:48) He gives life through his word (John 6:63, Matt 4:4)
Additional passages to read with this section of scripture: Matt 16:13-28, Mark 8:22-38-Here the Bible reveals that Jesus had healed a man who was blind in Bethsaida at same place where he fed the 5,000 and then in Damanutha where the Pharisees posed questions and seeking a sign revealed in Marks account.
Jesus would leave there and travel to Caesarea Philippi. Luke records “he prayed alone”, before meeting with the apostles and asking who do men say I am. Luke 9:18 -Only Time recorded in these texts (Matt 16, Mark 8 )
In Matthew account-Peter would respond (Matt 16:15-20, Christ the Son of the Living God, Upon that pebble of confession , Christ would build his church (church of Christ) and Peter would preach the gospel and give entry into that Kingdom/church (Acts2:38,41,47) on the day of Pentecost along with the other Apostles.
Primary Text: Luke 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Point #1 Any Man-This denotes that Christ desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth(1 Tim 2:4), since Jesus has the words of eternal life(John 6:63-68). Yet one must obey all that Jesus says in order to please him (Luke 6:46) Any man denotes that any person who desires to follow Jesus can do this, if he will be willing to give up the world (1 John 2:15-17) and obey him (Heb 5:8-9) by Faith (Rom 1:16, John 8:24, Luke 13:3, Acts 8:37, Acts 2:38). Since the righteous will live by Faith (Rom 1:17) and Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Rom 10:17).
Point # 2-“Will” “come” after Me(Jesus)
This word “will” in KJV-means a Desire, to have resolve to do something. This requires a mindset focused on the will of God and the word of God to do it(Phil 2:5-8, Matt 7:21-28). We are all making a choice of what will we do with Jesus who is called Christ(Matt 27:22). We are making that choice daily.
“Come” (erchomai-gk- to Go) after Jesus. Christians must follow his footsteps (1 Pet 2:21-22, Rev 14:4).
We must desire to Go after Jesus and seek to do his will and not our own (Matt 6:33, Heb 11:6). We must follow his voice and word. John 12:48, and be willing to put it into practice.
Point # 3 -He must deny (arneomai-gk-strongly repudiate, deny) himself-
Questions to consider:
Have I been self serving, self centered? Does the people around me view me as a person who only pleases themselves? Do my friends, neighbors, coworkers see me serving others or myself? Am I a Christian who is self serving? These are all important questions to consider.
How have I served in 2020? Who have I served? What ways am I serving? Paul said he was crucified with Christ (Gal 2:20) nevertheless I live, yet not I but “Christ liveth in me.” Paul said to Live is Christ and to die is again. (Phil 1:21) What will change in your life in 2020, and beginning 2021? Will you strongly deny self? You will have to strongly deny self if you truly follow Christ.
Point #4- Take up his Cross “daily”-(Luke records these words that are not mentioned in the other 2 accounts). Literally “Every day”- (Kata Hemeran-Greek -
See also Kata-Every First day of Week when Christians met (Sunday) to give as God has prospered him in 1 Cor 16:1-2(thus the need to give and partake of Lords Supper every week-Acts 20:7), not once a quarter or year.
Take up the cross- the cross was a horizontal beam in which one would carry to the site of execution usually in the presence of a jeering mob, motivated. The one carrying could be hit with objects, spit upon, mocked, insulted, ridiculed all the way to their death of crucifixion. Thus the point Jesus makes is if you are going to follow me, be prepared to be persecuted even up to the point of death (2 Tim 3:12).
Point #5 Follow(Akoloutheo- to follow, to cleave steadfastly to one, conformed wholly (See Rom 12:1-2) to his example , in living and in dying also (Strong’s Concordance) Me(Christ)
Am I conforming or being transformed? Am I Steadfast? Am I wholly devoted to his example? Am I IN CHRIST? Have I obeyed the gospel of Christ?
All of these questions we must all answer.
If I am not in Christ I can be, by submitting to do all he(Jesus says)-Psalm 119:160-Sum total of thy word is Truth.
The Bible says:
Hear the word of God (Rom 10:17)
Faith is produced that Jesus is the son of God (John 8:24)
Faith moves you to Repent (turn from sin) Acts 17:30-31)
Faith moves you to Confess he is the son of God (Rom 10:9-10)
Faith moves you to be immersed in water by his authority for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38,Mark 16:16)
Christ will then add you (Acts 2:41,47) to his kingdom/church he purchased(Matt 16:18,Rom 16:16, Acts 20:28)
Then you must take up the cross daily and follow him to the end (Acts 2:42, 1 Cor 15:58Rev 2:10) ... See MoreSee Less
We would love to study the Bible with you! The Bible is the greatest book ever written since it comes from God and shows us His great love for us by sending Christ to die on the cruel cross.
